LOS ANGELES, CA (January 19, 2011) – Principal photography concludes this weekend on director Staci Layne Wilson‘s first film, The Key To Annabel Lee [A Woman In Triptych]. “Interestingly enough,” says Wilson, “wrap date was locked in on Edgar Allan Poe’s birthday. We had some rather remarkable coincidences every date we shot — we commenced on December 8, 2010 which marked the 30th anniversary of John Lennon’s assassination (whose song ‘Imagine’ fits our theme as well) and finished the bulk of our filming on December 15, the day one of my favorite directors and a great inspiration, Jean Rollin, passed away.” The director adds, “I also think it’s interesting to note that Annabel Lee is the last complete poem composed by Poe, and it’s the very first thing I directed.”

Death, and things in threes, are major themes in The Key To Annabel Lee [A Woman In Triptych]. Narrating and starring in the films (four shorts, in all — best-described as a cinematic form of installation art) is Nivek Ogre (Repo! The Genetic Opera), famous as the lead singer of the industrial rock band, Skinny Puppy. Diane Ayala Goldner (Feast) appears as a wolf-like seducer in two installments of the experimental film, but “the star of the show, as in the poem, is Annabel Lee herself,” says Wilson. “She is the triptych of the tale, representing a notion along the lines of The Three Faces of Eve.” The director plays a version of the doomed heroine, along with Cherilyn Wilson (Parasmonia) and Corrie Shenigo (After You).

“I have three distinct dynamic segments, each of which are comprised of the women portraying Annabel Lee,” just because, “I like things in trios: Clotho, Lachesis and Atropos. Trinities. Sun, moon, and stars. My color palette of red, white, and black. Trimesters. Seraphs — as mentioned in the poem — are angels described as having three wings. Poe uses three R’s – rhyme, rhythm, and repetition – in Annabel Lee.” The fourth, and most major, part is entitled “Integration” and merges the three personalities into one story.

While the plot line hasn’t been revealed yet, Wilson offers some insights. “One of my favorite novels of all time, Lolita, was a little inspired by Poe’s Annabel Lee… Originally, Nabokov titled the novel The Kingdom by the Sea. There are a few connections in my film, especially in regard to the forbidden, obsession, and fetish. Other inspirations include Little Red Riding Hood (see: the Blue Streak Productions logo), the works of Lewis Carroll, and the photography of Helmut Newton.”

Seems that Mr. Poe has been having quite the successful posthumous career with Jeffrey Combs performing his critically-acclaimed one man show as the famous dark prince of literature, and now word has it that  John Cusack will play him in the upcoming film, THE RAVEN.

Speaking of The Raven, the dark-feathered one has given me permission to announce a new Poe-adapted short film titled THE KEY TO ANNABEL LEE written & directed by my dear friend Staci Layne Wilson (her cinematic debut), and which comes from Poe’s poem ANNABEL LEE.

Besides being an entertainment reporter, film critic, author, and now filmmaker, Staci is quite a talented natural photographer. Her film stars Cherilyn Wilson (no relation), Corrie Shenigo, Diane Goldner, Ogre (of SKINNY PUPPY) and Staci herself.

She and her loyal multi-tasking crew, which included your’s truly as one of the “Set Photographers/Production Assistants” (on the first day of shooting), recently wrapped principal photography (aside from a few pick-up shots), and then she will begin the post-production process very shortly (i.e. editing, music score etc.).

At the beginning of this month, I went to SHRIEKFEST’s 10th Annual festivities, where my latest script 10/31 (a Halloween-themed spec I co-wrote with my buddy Jag Sandhanwalia), was a Semi-Finalist and garnered the attention of a literary agent who is interested in us as a writing team. Since the agent wants to see more writing samples, Jag and I are currently working on our 2nd horror script as a team. We both have our individual screenplays that we intend to direct in the future. But we’ll see where this spec route takes us.

I was able to see an amazing sci-fi thriller from Germany, titled TRANSFER, which (to me) came across like a cross between GATTACA and Reminded me of GATTACA with a twist, dealing on issues of race, aging, class & slavery in a high-tech future. TRANSFER definitely was the most though-provoking film I had seen a very long time. The film won as bast Science Fiction film at Shriekfest. Another cool Sci/Fi Horror film that I enjoyed in the festival is GREY SKIES…

…which is sort of a cross between THE EVIL DEAD and CABIN FEVER meets M. Night Shyamalan’s SIGNS (but with superior alien creatures created by Barney Burman). The film features a stand out dramatic performance from actress/producer Stacy Jorgensen and comic relief from Michael Cornacchia (whom clearly made an impression on the audience; they kept laughing at all the snarky comments his character made). GREY SKIES would go on to win Shriekfest’s Audience Award.

(Stacy will probably want to kill me for snapping her in mid speak! Ha!)

I also saw a cool zombie origin flick titled ASHES from director Elias Kostas that starred Brian Krause formally of the long-running WB witch series CHARMED, and Kadeem Hardison (formally of THE COSBY SHOW spin-off A DIFFERENT WORLD). The movie dealt more with the deadly virus that came from a sick jellyfish and how the infection quickly spread through a hospital. In most zombie films, this scenario would be the beginning of the opening act. What I found refreshing was that the whole film centered on how the disease was spreading. The actual zombie apocalypse would take up the last act of the film. ASHES took the top prize as best Horror.

In addition to the feature films showcased, the festival included a number of excellent short films. I didn’t see all of them. But out of the batch I saw, here’s the five that I enjoyed the most:

MIRACLE FISH – about a precocious young boy who awakens from a nap in the school’ sick room and realizes he’s the only one left on the campus. That is until he discovers, there’s someone else there with him. Someone very dangerous. In the midst of this scenario, a “miracle fish” toy will decide his fate.

This 18 minute Australian short has grade A feature film quality all over it from the performance of the little boy to the excellent scope widescreen cinematography. Seek this little film out whenever possible. It was nominated in the best live action short films category at the 82nd Academy Awards!

THE GUEST – a cool short concerning a woman who accepts questionable guest into her home one late evening, who seemingly is on the run from the police over some recent murders of women in the neighborhood. Though he pleads his innocence to her, tensions quickly rise for the both of them with deadly results.

DISPATCH – synopsis from Shriekfest program booklet – a woman wakes up to find herself barely hanging on to dear life. With evidence of bloody violence, she must figure out who or what is responsible if she is to make it through the night.

FRANK DANCOOLO: PARANORMAL DRUG DEALER

Not sure what to make of this cyberpunk/neo noir/sci-fi/slapstick comedy/thriller from director Andrew W. Jones. But it had everyone in stitches, especially when the female protagonist warns her boss to never underestimate “THE POWER OF MY FUCKING UTERUS!” You just have to watch it.

Lastly, I made a new friend in screenwriter Will Link, who was a Finalist this year in Shriekfest with his script VALENTINE’S NIGHT, and I met a logtime FB friend in person for the first time – the very cool (and very pretty) photo journalist Dana Davidson!

A special shout out goes to festival director, the ultra-sweet Denise Gossett, who was moved to tears by the support that Shriekfest has attained for the past decade. She’s a true champion of independent horror cinema, and just one of the kindest, endearing people you will ever have the pleasure to meet.

NIGHT OF DEMONS Screamfest/LA premiere & review

October 8th, 2010 – Twas the NIGHT OF THE DEMONS remake premiere at the 10th Annual SCREAMFEST LA, when all through the house, not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse… okay, that’s just a bold face lie! Ha!

The screening was a lot of fun… I met up with my LA horror partner in crime Staci Layne Wilson (whom was working the red carpet) and other friends/acquaintances.

New Beverly Horrorthon

Another cool event I checked out was the 12 hour Horrorthon at The New Beverly Theater, which was screening 7 flicks starting from 7:30pm and ending at 7:30am the following day.

I almost didn’t make it inside, as the show was Sold Out a couple days in advance. Still, some of us took a chance that a few tickets might be available at the door. Luckily, I (and 3 others, whom were also at the front of that long line) were chosen ones to get inside. Due to our common bond of being ticketless at the door (with no guarantee of ever getting inside), we ended up being our own group for the duration of the event.

The list of movies playing in order were Dario Argento’s TENEBRE (1982), Lucio Fulci’s THE GATES OF HELL (aka 1981’s CITY OF THE LIVING DEAD), THE EVIL (1978) , secret movie TRICK OR TREAT (1984), THE GIANT CLAW (1957), THE OUTING (1987) and BREEDERS (1986). I managed to stay awake for most of the movies (I wasn’t in the mood to watch THE GIANT CLAW, so I slept during that one, and I dozed off occasionally during THE OUTING and BREEDERS. I wished I slept through those entirely though. They were atrociously bad, and not in a “so bad, they’re good” kind of way; they were just plain bad that I never want to see them again. Not even BREEDERS’ gratuitous nudity could distract me from some of the most blatantly amateur acting I’ve seen in a long time.

REAPER AWARDS

Taking place at the Roosevelt Hotel on Hollywood & Highland, this was the last major horror event I participated in – this time as a photo journalist. Thanks to my aforementioned gal pal Staci Layne Wilson (of Horror.com), I was offered the chance to cover the REAPER AWARDS on her behalf. She was one of the judges.

The awards show basically showcases the best in home entertainment DVD releases within the horror genre.

This pretty much covered my October festivities. Unfortunately, I didn’t get dressed up and go ot this year, so I instead I watched a two of my Italian Horror favorites – Lucio Fulci’s THE BEYOND and Dario Argento’s SUSPIRIA

Angela returns bigger (not literally), badder (figuratively) and now sexier in this remake co-produced by Kevin Tenney (director of the original 1988 NOTD).

Written by husband & wife team Adam Gierasch & Jace Anderson (Dario Argento’s MOTHER OF TEARS, Tobe Hooper’s THE TOOLBOX MURDERS remake) and directed by Adam (who made his directorial debut with AUTOPSY), NIGHT OF THE DEMONS (2010) in some ways is an improvement on the original, which I dig I lot.

For those not familiar with either movie, NIGHT OF THE DEMONS is simply about a group of party-hardy young adults trapped inside a house on Halloween night, where supernatural powers are unleashed, causing a form of demonic possession that overtakes the group one by one.

I know that many online fanboys and fangirls were vehemently opposed to this new update (but that happens with nearly all remakes). Personally, I feel that Gierasch’s dark comedic film tone is still on par with the original. In some cases, even better with the snarky dialogue between the female cast, which consists of Maddie (Monica Keena – FREDDIE VS. JASON), Suzanne (Bobbi Sue Luther – LAID TO REST), Lily (Diora Baird – THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE: THE BEGINNING) and the new Angela (Shannon Elizabeth – Wes Craven’s CURSED), who does a pretty good job making this somewhat iconic character from the original all her own. Will she be remembered as well as Amelia ‘Mimi’ Kinkade’s personification of Angela, that remains to be seen. Ultimately, it’s not a deal breaker in enjoying this flick.

Rounding out the cast are the dudes: Colin (Edward Furlong – TERMINATOR 2: JUDGEMENT DAY), Jason (John F. Beach – Fear Net’s FEAR CLINIC) and Dex (Michael Copon – DARK HOUSE), playing the reluctant hero, the worrisome sidekick and pretty-boy hunk respectively.

Also, making notable cameos are B movie scream queens Tiffany Shepis (NIGHTMARE MAN) and Linnea Quigley (from the original NOTD), whose cameo references her character in the original in all of it’s nearly full “moon” glory! Thongs be damned!

I’ll admit I tend to like most of the main characters in the original more than the ones in the remake. But at the same time, the new characters didn’t annoy me, like the dumb kids in the Platinum Dunes’ 2009 reboot of FRIDAY THE 13TH.

This version has more production value with the actual lively Halloween party being shown this time around (something lacking in the original).

In addition, Gierasch and Anderson take some of the gags from the original, notably the ”lipstick gag” to even more laughably gratuitous extremes. Plus, there’s even an interesting “transformation” sex scene, I’m assuming, is a homage to THE HOWLING (1981).

The movie boasts a kick ass 80’s inspired soundtrack of Goth rock, metal and punk (with the likes of 45 GRAVE & CONCRETE BLONDE), though many of the bands on the soundtrack are newer.

Accompanying the soundtrack is a moody score from Joseph Bishara (Mike Mendez’s THE GRAVEDANCERS), who’s a composer on the rise, especially within the horror/thriller genre. You’ll wanna keep your ears open for his work in upcoming films, such as SAW co-creator James Wan’s next feature INSIDIOUS (2010).

The set design and lighting, with its prime colors, contrasted well with the darkness covering the majority of the interiors. The cinematography from Yaron Levy and the editing from Andrew Cohen were executed very well. My only complaint was that there was too much “shaky-cam” during some of the quick-cut action scenes, where I couldn’t really tell what was going on. But those are minor quibbles. I especially enjoyed the old sepia-toned silent movie sections, showing the back-story of this demonic tale. The look came across as more authentic to that era than the similar-styled digital shots from Fruit Chan’s recent remake of the Japanese supernatural horror thriller DON’T LOOK UP (2009).

I haven’t seen all the movies that Gierasch and Anderson have written. I’m still curious to read their script to Argento’s MOTHER OF TEARS, since the movie itself was a very mixed bag for me, hindered with too much exposition and overacting. That flick is one of those “it’s so bad, it’s good” – which is a letdown, given how much I revere the first two parts of the “The Three Mothers” Trilogy: SUSPIRIA (1977) and INFERNO (1980). The scribe duo’s work for Tobe Hooper’s version of THE TOOLBOX MURDERS (2004) fared better, utilizing some SUSPIRIA influences here and there.

NOTD is certainly the couple’s best work to date as screenwriters. The casual dialogue exchanges come across as natural and funny, and the action moves at a quick, steady pace. The only real gripe I have with dialogue is that Furlong’s character dropped way too many F-bombs, for my liking. If this were a drinking game, I’d be drunk within the first ten minutes, and he drops the “bomb” throughout. Otherwise, nothing really seems forced, except maybe for a particular sequence in the 2nd half, where our survivors find shelter in a “safe room”, and this section of the movie employs blatant exposition and plot contrivances that – I believe – are done in a purposely tongue-in-cheek manner that you have to laugh at the absurdity. Some people may interpret this as bad/lazy writing. Maybe they’re right, and I’m wrong. But I don’t think I am. The absurdity is played up to the max, much akin to the original EVIL DEAD (1981).

In essence, NIGHT OF THE DEMONS (2009) is a fun movie to watch with an enthusiastic crowd. Adam Gierasch and Jace Anderson knew what type movie they were making and who they were making it for. Will fans of the original embrace it? I hope they do. If they take their love of the original too seriously, then in some ways I feel sorry for them.
